Here are five ways to make a big difference!
Use compact fluorescent lights (CFLs).
It is predicted that if every U.S. household replaced just one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would save over 450 million dollars a year in energy costs and prevent emissions equivalent to that of 800,000 cars. (Energy Star)
CFLs last longer than regular light bulbs (approximately 9,000 hours). They will save you money (they use about a quarter less energy). They also release less heat.
Always dispose of CFLs properly! They contain mercury. They must be disposed of at a hazardous waste disposal site.
If you can't commit to anything else – do this! From start to finish – purchase to install – it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. You will have made a substantial contribution to protecting the environment!
Use programmable thermostats.
Save 10% on your heating and cooling costs by setting your thermostat back when you're away and sleeping. If your thermostat is set to your comfortable setting before you return, you’ll never know the difference until you see the reduction in your energy bill.
Optimize your water heater.
Water heaters use excessive amounts of energy and generate a lot of CO2. For minimal costs you can insulate your water heater and pipe with a Jacket. Turning the temperature down will also save more and be safer too!
Drive wise!
Making a wise decision as to how and what to drive is one of the most dynamic decisions you can make. Choose a fuel efficient car, keep it maintained and tires fully inflated. Avoid long idling time, keep a light foot on the accelerator and keep your engine tuned!
Insulate!
Adding insulation is easy. It is also one of the least expensive ways to improve energy efficiency. There are 46 million under insulated homes in the U.S. (according to the Havard School of Public Health).

Save time, postage, and paper with automatic billing, online banking, and direct deposit.
Use less detergent. Manufacturers recommend more than necessary.
Avoid house hold pesticides.
Buy locally grown food and locally made products
Save coat hangers and return them to the cleaners.
Use a vegetable based dish soap instead of petroleum based.
Turn your TV off when you leave home. Your pet won't mind.
Use low phosphate or phosphate free detergent.
Use cold water when washing, otherwise use warm water wash and cold rinse. The temperature of the rinse doesn't matter.
Use adequate insulation particularly in the attic (see making your house green)
Compost your leaves and yard debris. Burning them creates air pollution and putting it in the trash wastes landfill space.
Clean your windows with vinegar, water, and old newspapers instead of chemical products and paper towel.
Don't buy products that are hazardous to the environment or manufactured at the expense of important habitats such as rain forests.
